Paintings in our collection depict submarines on the surface, submarines in action, cartoons and some portraits, in different medias such as oils, watercolours, etchings and drawings. |
Medals
|
The Museum holds a collection of medals from World War I and World War II (campaign and gallantry medals), memorial plaques as well as sports medals and medallions. Ribbon bars and miniatures also feature in the collection. |
Uniform
|
The Museum holds a large collection of uniform representing both the full dress and working uniform. Accessories include cloth badges, metal badges, swords, caps and cap tallies |
Models
|
The Museum holds a representative collection of different classes of submarine, from pre Holland 1 to the present day. Large models, table models and periscope training models make up this collection |
Personal Effects
|
This part of the collection consists of items representing submariner's everyday life whilst at sea - ditty boxes, cigarette cases, suitcases, games, handmade brooches and lighters. Belongings of prisoners of war are also represented. |
Relics
|
Relics cover parts of submarines (such as machinery and instruments, for example, helms wheel or compasses) and anything relating to historical events such as clocks and launching axes. |
Badges
|
The Museum holds a large collection of crests (submarine badges), as well as crest casts. The crests in the collection are mainly from the World War II or post war period. |
Bells
|
The Museum holds a small but comprehensive collection of submarine bells ranging from World War I onwards. |
Periscopes
|
The museum currently holds 17 periscopes. Some are full size and some are periscope heads. There are a few periscope lenses in the collection. |
Plaques
|
The current collection of plaques is quite diverse, the main groups being nameplates, deck plates, honours boards, and commemorative plaques. Part of the collection comprises of mounted models, presentation plaques, commemorative plates and tallies. |
Weapons
|
The collection covers the development of submarine weaponry from the 1890s to the present day, including torpedoes (and associated equipment such as torpedo safety forks, torpedo spreading slide rules and torpedo calculators), mines and firearms. The Museum also boasts a Polaris missile and a Tomahawk missile. |
Flags
|
The collection includes the unique submarine "Jolly Roger", British White Ensigns and commissioning pennants. The collection also holds national flags such as the Union Jack as well as Rear Admiral's flags, and signal flags. |
Trophies
|
This part of the collection includes the literal meaning of the object - sports and efficiency trophies, as well as mascots held by submarines, most often representing their name, such as the totem pole from HMS Totem and the narwhal tusk from HMS Narwhal. |
Equipment
|
This includes all types of instruments and tools used aboard a submarine as well as. |
