£3.4million lottery win to save HMS Alliance

Alliance Conservation Project - the Latest News

Wohoo! The staff, guides, volunteers and submariners across the land have all received a great boost thanks to the £3.4million award from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF).

There is no doubt also to the great relief that we are all feeling.  To know that our ambitious plans to restore and conserve HMS Alliance has been seen as worthwhile by the Heritage Lottery Fund is one thing, but we are also extremely grateful to all our staff, trustees, volunteers and supporters across the country that are working so hard to raise the money that we need. It also means that we can start work very soon!

As well as the physical conservation of the casing which is widely known to need urgent repair; the project also includes a new education programme and dynamic interpretation scheme which will bring Alliance ‘back to life’ for all visitors.

Improvements will include dressing the accommodation spaces to reflect the decades of Alliance’s service from the 1940’s through to the 1970’s with interactive soundscapes that reflect how the submarine looked and felt whilst on operation. The Museum will also be taking the project to the local community with an outreach programme featuring a range of fun and engaging events.

It is hoped that volunteers will play an important role in all these activities as the project aims to clock up to 2,500 hours of volunteer time over its life span. Fundraising still continues as the conservation work is budgeted to cost £6.5m. Over £5.8 million in funds and pledges have now been raised, including this £3.4 million award by the Heritage Lottery Fund. Also a further £1.5 million is required for a new Alliance gallery.

My wife and I visited the museum last week while on holiday and took the guided tour around the Alliance, we found the guide Mr Chadwick to be the best guide we have encountered in a long time visiting various museums, he's enthusiasm and knowledge were excellent and he made the tour so interesting, we will certainly visit again when we are in the area, thank you.
